About Me.
Back when I was in the first grade classroom, teaching reading was hard. The way we were instructed back then, in the early 2000's, was through Balanced Literacy. I knew it wasn't working, but there wasn't a lot of information or material on other ways to teach kids to read. Flash forward a few years to my youngest entering third grade, struggling. We read together every night, we had books everywhere in the house, we practiced everything that came home as homework. Yet, there was a disconnect that we found out later was dyslexia and ADHD. The school kept stating that he was fine and would catch up, but I am glad I didn't wait. The summer before fourth grade, I knew we needed something different. So, I went out in search of how to help. It was then I started hearing about the Science of Reading. I immersed myself in it. I received training in Orton-Gillingham, did practicums, completed LETRS training and found out teaching your own child is quite the challenge (understatement!) and got him specialized tutors. During this time I also discovered how many other children were struggling just like mine and I started sharing my knowledge with families and other struggling readers. Which brought me to begin Forston Learning, LLC., combining all of my loves of teaching, movement and the brain, and positive psychology. I especially enjoy working with fellow educators who find themselves as parents of striving students.
